Image Color Picker

Click any pixel in an image and read back its exact colour as HEX, RGB and HSL, sampled from the original file rather than from a screenshot of the page.

Click any pixel of an image to read its exact colour as HEX, RGB and HSL — sampled from the original file, entirely offline in your browser.

Steps and notes

What is Image Color Picker?

Find out what colour a pixel in a picture actually is. You click, the tool reads that single pixel out of the decoded original and reports it three ways — HEX for CSS, RGB for design tools, HSL when you are reasoning about the colour as hue and lightness. Because the sample comes from the source bitmap and not from a screenshot of the page, the result is unaffected by how large or small the image happens to be displayed, and it is not contaminated by browser colour management on screen capture. This is the version of an eyedropper that answers a factual question about a file: what is the brand colour in this logo screenshot, what background does this texture use, which hex is that gradient endpoint. Everything happens locally — the image is never uploaded, which matters when the picture is a design mockup that has not shipped.

  1. Pick an image
  2. Click the pixel you want (the cursor readout shows the coordinate)
  3. Copy the HEX value, or read the RGB and HSL forms
  • The sample is a 1×1 read of the original bitmap, so display scaling never changes the answer.
  • Alpha is not reported: a fully transparent PNG pixel returns whatever RGB the file happens to store there, which is often black.
  • The image is decoded by the browser, so formats the browser cannot read cannot be sampled.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the colour I pick look different from what I see?
You are seeing the pixel through your display profile, gamma and any CSS filters on the page; the tool reports the file's stored value. For a single image on a plain page those agree closely, but a colour-managed viewer can shift them.
Why is a transparent area reported as black?
PNG stores red, green and blue even where alpha is zero, and this tool reads those channels without compositing. A transparent pixel therefore often reports 0,0,0. Composite it over a background first if you need the visible colour.
Can I get the colour at an exact coordinate?
The coordinate readout shows where you clicked in image pixels, so you can aim deliberately. Very fine targets are easier when you zoom the browser, since the click still maps back to the original pixel grid.
Does it work on photos with compression artefacts?
Yes, but neighbouring pixels differ: JPEG ringing means a 1×1 sample on a noisy edge is only one sample. Pick a flat area, or average a region if you need a representative colour.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is decoded in your browser and sampled from the resulting bitmap; there is no network request in this tool.
