IBAN validator and parser
Validates an IBAN bank account number and breaks it down into country, check digits and BBAN.
Validate and parse IBAN numbers. Check if an IBAN is valid and get the country, BBAN, if it is a QR-IBAN and the IBAN friendly format.
Steps and notes
What is IBAN validator and parser?
Validate an IBAN and break it into its parts: country code, check digits, BBAN and a space-grouped friendly format for display. The validator implements the ISO 13616 mod-97 check, so a mistyped digit is caught instantly — exactly what you want before wiring money or storing the number in a CRM.
- Enter the IBAN (spaces are fine)
- Read the validation result
- Read the parsed country code and account parts below
- An IBAN carries its own check digits, so a malformed one is rejected outright — first check you did not mistype it
Frequently asked questions
- How does IBAN validation work?
- The check digits are computed over the rearranged account number with a mod-97 operation (ISO 13616). If the whole number does not satisfy the check, at least one character is wrong — though validity does not guarantee the account exists.
- What is a QR-IBAN?
- A Swiss variant with an alternative check-digit calculation, reserved for QR-bill invoicing. This tool flags whether an IBAN is one, which matters if you process Swiss payments.
- Why is the friendly format grouped in fours?
- IBANs are officially printed in four-character blocks because grouped digits are dramatically easier to read aloud and transcribe. The grouping is presentation only — systems store it without spaces.
