YAML Formatter & Validator — Guide

Prettify your YAML string into a friendly, human-readable format.

What it is and when to use it

Normalise a YAML document into clean, consistent indentation — the single most common source of YAML bugs. Paste your config, get it re-emitted with uniform spacing and structure, and use the parse step as a syntax check before kubectl or your CI pipeline rejects it for one stray tab.

Formats YAML so the indentation is consistent and easy to read and debug.

How to use it

  1. Paste the YAML
  2. Click format
  3. Copy the result

A worked example

Fill in sample YAML

name: devbox
services:
- web
- api

Things that trip people up

  • YAML expresses hierarchy through indentation, and only spaces work — never tabs

Questions people ask

Why does YAML break so easily?
Structure comes from indentation, not brackets — one wrong space changes nesting, and tabs are forbidden outright. Formatting normalises all of it and fails fast on anything unparseable.
Does the formatter fix wrong indentation?
It re-emits whatever the parser understood. If your YAML parses, the output comes out with consistent indentation; if the structure itself is ambiguous, parsing fails and points you at the line.
Will it preserve my comments and anchors?
Parse-and-rewrite loses comments in some cases, because comments are not part of the parsed model. Keep a version-controlled copy of commented configs rather than round-tripping through any formatter.
