JSON to YAML converter — Guide
Simply convert JSON to YAML with this online live converter.
What it is and when to use it
YAML is a superset of JSON — any valid JSON is also valid YAML — which is why it is so common for configuration: it preserves everything JSON can express while adding a cleaner, indentation-based syntax and comments. This tool re-emits a JSON value as idiomatic YAML: nested objects become indented blocks, arrays become dash lists, and quoting is added only where YAML would otherwise misinterpret the value (a bare yes or 1.0, for example). The companion YAML-to-JSON tool does the reverse when you need to feed a YAML config into a JSON API.
Converts JSON into YAML, widely used for Kubernetes manifests and other configuration files.
How to use it

Questions people ask
- Is the result valid YAML?
- Yes — YAML is a superset of JSON, so the emitted text parses as both. Indentation is added with spaces (never tabs, which YAML rejects), and values that look like other YAML types are quoted so they stay strings.
- Why did my number get quoted?
- YAML infers types: a value like 1.0 or 2024 may be read back as a number, and yes/no/on/off as booleans. To keep the data identical to the source JSON, this tool quotes values that would otherwise be reinterpreted, so "1.0" stays the string "1.0".
- Can I convert this back to JSON?
- Yes, with the YAML-to-JSON tool. Because YAML is a JSON superset the round trip is lossless for the data model; you only lose the YAML comments, which JSON has no place to store.
