Encrypt / decrypt text — Guide

Encrypt clear text and decrypt ciphertext using crypto algorithms like AES, TripleDES, Rabbit or RC4.

What it is and when to use it

Encrypt and decrypt text with classic web cryptography algorithms — AES, TripleDES, Rabbit and RC4 (via crypto-js) — using a shared key. Handy for quick obfuscation of notes between machines, CTF puzzles, or interoperability checks when you need to see exactly what a given cipher+key produces.

Encrypts and decrypts text with symmetric algorithms such as AES, TripleDES, Rabbit and RC4.

How to use it

  1. Enter the text to encrypt
  2. Set a key
  3. Pick an algorithm and click encrypt; to decrypt, enter the ciphertext with the same key and click decrypt

A worked example

Fill in sample text

This is a message to encrypt

Copy this into the tool, or open Encrypt / decrypt text

Things that trip people up

  • If you lose the key you cannot recover the data — save it first
  • Algorithms and modes are not interchangeable: decryption must use exactly the same settings as encryption

Questions people ask

Is this suitable for protecting real secrets?
Treat it as a utility, not an infrastructure: AES here is fine for a locked note, but serious key management (storage, rotation, derivation) is what real cryptography engineering is for. Never protect anything critical with RC4.
Why does the same text encrypt differently each time?
Modes like CBC use a random initialisation vector, so identical plaintext+key yields different ciphertext — by design. Decrypting still returns the original text.
Which algorithm should I pick?
AES is the modern default. TripleDES is legacy-compatible, Rabbit and RC4 are stream ciphers mostly seen in old systems — use them only to interoperate with something that already speaks them.
